Rector High School Future Business Leaders of America members Justin Beck, Kailee Carter, Cheyenne Ellis, and Ryan LaRue joined 8,000 other high school FBLA members at the FBLA National Summer Leadership Conference held in San Antonio, Texas, June 26th-July 3rd. The students earned the privilege of competing on the national level by previously placing at district and state competitions. Ellis, who placed second on the state level and sixth at district, competed in the individual event, FBLA Principles and Procedures, and also took the opportunity while attending the conference to compete in one of the open events. Beck, Carter, and LaRue, who placed first at state and at district, competed in the Entrepreneurship team event, where they placed fifth among the competing teams and claimed a $200 cash award for the RHS chapter from event sponsor NFIB Young Entrepreneur Foundation.
In addition to participating in the competitive events, the students attended leadership workshops, general sessions, and regional sessions. They also participated in electing the new national officers and visited the various campaign and exhibit booths.
While in San Antonio, the group made a day trip to SeaWorld, toured the Alamo grounds and museum, and enjoyed spectacular views of the Alamo City from the 750 foot-tall Tower of the Americas. Of course, no trip to San Antonio is complete without a riverboat ride on the famous San Antonio Riverwalk.
“Participating in FBLA has been life changing for me. I will never forget the excitement I felt walking out on that huge stage to accept our award. We thank Rector Public Schools and the Helping Hands Foundation for the roles they played in making this trip possible for us.” noted Beck. “Undoubtedly this experience changed my life and affirmed my decision to pursue a career in business, observed LaRue. Ellis stated, “I am so grateful that I had this opportunity. Now I am just ready to tackle a new event and qualify for next year’s competition in Anaheim.
RHS FBLA is sponsored by Lisa Manchester, who accompanied the group, and Katherine Champ.
